Have your say; Sunshine Coast Hotels

Following our previous update about Council’s proposed Accommodation Hotel Incentives Package, the community is now being invited to provide comment on the draft Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI). The TLPI has been prepared to encourage four and five-star hotel investment to address the current/projected shortfall in hotel accommodation on the Sunshine Coast.

We at ASTP recognise the urgent need for short-term, full-service hotels within the region and believe the targeted locations are most appropriate for the uptake. We support the TLPI and agree that the specified relaxations will encourage the delivery of upscale accommodation hotels, and in turn benefit the local communities and region’s future economic growth.

ASTP encourage you, your colleagues and any other acquaintances to complete Council’s online feedback form in support of the proposed TLPI. It’s a short survey (with your submission confidential) which will help steer Council’s decision-making on the matter.

The survey is open until 5pm Tuesday 08 October with results to be presented at Council’s Ordinary Meeting in December.

Recap: on 29 August 2024 Councillors voted to endorse the Accommodation Hotel Incentives Strategic Policy but delay decision on the TLPI to undertake community consultation despite it not being a mandatory process under legislation. The TLPI proposes to provide additional building height allowances and reduced car parking rates.

The proposed TLPI will only apply to existing major centre and tourism locations in Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Caloundra, Sippy Downs, Nambour and Beerwah, and only for those hotels with a minimum four-star rating and at least 140 room.

Council advises that any height exceedance under the TLPI are unlikely to result in development that is substantially different to what is existing or planned for in the relevant areas.
